Printing to the Tune of Success


For most people who want to make it in the business world, it takes years of schooling and then even more years of climbing the corporate ladder before achieving a management title. There are few very rare cases, however, that someone inexperienced and uneducated in business can step in and make a company successful. Niagara region’s Econoprint is one such example.
Econoprint started their local printing business in 1976. Rod Joanisse, the current president, was only interested in his music career at the time, and had been traveling across the country touring with a country rock band.

By December 1979, Rod had come back home to Niagara and was ready to work for his father in the family business, Econoprint. Although Rod had no business skills and only a grade ten education, his father saw the energy and enthusiasm for business in his son. Because of this, his father took a back seat and Rod took over the venture.

At the time, business at Econoprint was slow. With only Rod, his father, and one press person, they were a small business with no direction. But with Rod behind the wheel, sales began to climb within the year. More workers were hired, changes were made, and sales went from a mere sixty-five dollars annually to a whopping one million dollars a year in only a couple of years. Rod transformed a fledgling business into a family success story, with his sons working in the business.

Econoprint has been at its present location since 1979, and in business for over thirty five years. The changes and upgrades since the company’s conception have been paramount; having started the business with only one thousand square feet of space, they now boast over fifteen thousand square feet with a full sign department. That includes car wraps, vehicle lettering, roll-up banners, windows posters, backlit signs and much more. Instead of a mere three workers (including Rod and his father), Econoprint now employs twelve people as it continuously grows.

This printing company is broken down into four areas: Quick and Commercial Printing, Digital Copying, Wide Format Signs, and Promotional Products, such as imprinted pens, key chains, calendars and more. Econoprint considers the business to be a one-stop printing shop, due to their great customer service, years of experience, and their variety of printing equipment and product offerings.

They are presently in a self-described “aggressive expansion mode”. Rod also adds that he does not kid himself, if it were not for several key people in the business, including his two sons Stephen & Matthew who now take care of shop, Econoprint would not be where it is today.

Rod spent seven years as the president of OAQP (Ontario Association of Quick Printers). Their mission and foundation is education through seminars and workshops, and their conferences open the doors to new opportunities for its members. Teaching others about how to gain success has been a great experience for Rod.

Hard work and determination have paid off for Econoprint. Since the seventies, they have grown to become one of the region’s leading printing businesses. They have won many awards in different areas as well as most recently voted “Printer of The Year”. Concentrating on sales efforts and marketing have more than paid off for Econoprint, and continue to bring great success. It all comes back to Rod Joanisse, who left his musical career behind to take over the business for his father and turn into a triumph.

And the family tradition is carried on with Rod’s two sons. Currently Matthew handles all the Quotes & Orders along with the work flow through the shop and Stephen takes care of digital production and all the marketing. Econoprint’s success is definitely music to Rod’s ears.
