Frequently Asked Questions?

Below are some answers to commonly asked questions. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, feel free to contact us.

Many technical issues can also be resolved by consulting our Digital File Guidelines and Remember We Love PDF’s!”

Do I have to or Need to see a Proof?

Yes Yes Yes. There are a lot of reasons to see a proof, but the main reason is that everybody makes mistakes including. Last time we checked we were all human. From a simple typo, to supplying the wrong file, there’s always a chance something will go wrong. We will always provide a proof, either in person or online, and it is to your advantage to review it carefully. Any changes made to a document will also require the generation of a new proof. Quality starts with a proof that is correct. Nothing spoils your project more than when there are mistakes.

I was Expecting a Proof via email.  Why didn’t I receive it?

This is almost always caused by a spam filter blocking the email. We do a follow up call shortly after the proof has been sent to you, to be sure you did receive the proof. You may have to add art@econoprint.net to your address book.

I received an estimate in png format, and am unable to open it. Can’t you just give me the price, or save it in another format?

Due to the large number of estimates we generate on a daily basis, we need a system that is fast, accurate, and reliable. png files are cross-platform, and quick to email. If you are unable to read the aatachment in png format, please contact out quoting department and they will send file in PDF or Jpg. You can download Adobe Reader, or we can also fax, phone, mail, or deliver the estimate to you in person.

Are my files checked first?

Files are checked when an order is placed and a proof is generated. If a file is unusable, we will notify you before any extra costs are incurred. Files sent for estimate requests are not checked for errors (like missing fonts or incorrectly set bleeds).

Do you do Optical Character Recognition (OCR) scanning?

Yes, we can scan computer/typewriter generated text and convert to Word, Rich Text, or editable PDF formats (specify when ordering). We also do high-speed black & white to PDF, and high-resolution colour scanning from our Hi-Speed copiers.

Will you colour match a sample I print on my own printer, or a previous sample printed by you or another printer?

Yes but we cannot guarantee that your finished piece will match your printed sample. This is due in part to the widely varying results from different output devices including inkjet and laser printers, continuous tone proofing devices, and offset lithography. Even from one commercial printing company to another there can be significant differences in results. In particular, inkjet and laser prints are known to look substantially different than offset printing. Our equipment is calibrated daily, follows GATF printing standards and is designed to be accurate to the colour specified in your application. There are variables that will affect the colour from day to day, and an order printed last year may look different than one printed today. We generate a proof that will closely resemble the finished product. If an exact colour proof is required, then you should request a colour key.  If the colour in the proof is not what you expected, indicate on the proof for correction or manipulation.

Can you do colour correction to my file or files supplied from my graphic designer?

Yes, as long as we are working from the original file creation. Our art and prepress staff is adept with the software tools used for colour correction, but the originator of the document should be the one who is responsible for the final editing of colour, content, etc. Also, the original source file should always be used when a reprint is necessary at a later date. Different versions floating around can be a recipe for disaster.

Do you offer graphic design and typesetting services?

Absolutely…….. We have a full graphics department.  Document creation differs from graphic design in that we are not creating an original design concept such as a logo. If a customer has an idea of what they want to achieve and can supply elements such as logos, images or copy (handwritten or otherwise), we can assemble and create print ready documents. This is perfect for forms, editing existing copy, stationery, simple brochures, price lists, invitations, etc.

How should I impose (set up) my print order?

Provide your files one-up, and our art and prepress staff will impose in the most efficient way for printing. From one up to one hundred up.

Why are my file transfers slow, getting errors, or timing out?

Files being sent by email, should be no larger than 5 meg.  Our server will receive files up to 10 meg.  Unfortunately  the larger the file the more time it takes to transfer or even some information could be lost on a larger file, when transferring by email.

Why do I have to add bleeds to my document? I never had to before!

Econprint has a reputation for providing high quality printing. To this end, we can only produce quality output if we start with a properly created file. Some print shops will “fudge” a bleed by enlarging the artwork or trimming undersize. We will only do this as a last resort because doing so may affect the final size of your job, or may have unwanted and/or uneven white lines around the document. We encourage you to visit our guidelines section for tips on creating bleeds properly.
