Bleeds – What Does This Mean!

“Bleed” is the term used to indicate the area of a printed image that will be trimmed off after the document is printed and cut to the finished size. Printed pieces that have a white border around all 4 edges do NOT bleed. Projects that make use of image bleed must typically extend any background and/or images 1/8″ (3mm) beyond the final trim edge (crop marks). We will create bleeds by cutting on the crop marks, through the enlarged image/background.

Note that in the above image the background colour extends beyond the crop marks. The graphic image also extends past the crop area on the bottom and left of the card.

Depending upon which software you are using, if you do not understand how to create bleeds, we can typically create them for you. Let us know when submitting your job or estimate request. Note: Bleeds generally cost more to create.  From extra work on the design to the printing stage and printing on oversized stock. Then on the other hand, bleeds can be very creative and make your finished project look great.
